after a first ep of the year from stl, the solar phenomena label now welcomes romania’s romansoff. the raw tools label boss hails from bucharest and has also released his gritty, stripped back house and techno on creme organization and sportiv. here he offers four new tracks, with one remix from timedance man ploy completing the package.
halo epitomises romansoff’s style with its slow, heavy drums and sparse, scattered perc sounds. a lo-fi melody adds colour, while coach jacket ups the ante with busier claps and crashing hits laid over a turbulent, unsettled bassline. increasing the pressure further, graded grows manic with punchy drums, layers of fuzzy synths and bass and distant cries that are dark and unsettling. ploy flips this one into a prickly and atmospheric drum track that keeps you on edge.

dimensions recordings fifth release sees the label step into the world of the long player with istanbul native, kerem akdag s self-titled debut album. kerem has already been winning fans of the ilk of gilles peterson through his previous output of dusty house and tripped out beats in the last few years, and of course via his getdownsoclose offering on dimensions debut release. his debut album however, sees kerem deliver a mature piece of work, bright and timeless, equally effective in the club as it is at home and brimming with ideas, hooks and must have songs. across eight tracks kerem demonstrates a breadth of skills that most artists would work a lifetime to achieve. from the stepping beats of when i think of you to his subtle vocal layers on isolated and from the woozy beach vibes of sultan to the squelching, rasping synths of unite it s clear that there s very little that s outside of kerem s arsenal. the album rounds out fittingly with drums please, which perfectly displays kerem s jazz tendencies, a slow grooving track whose crescendo of stabs and drums create a song that s more powerful than its parts. kerem akdag s debut album clearly sets out the stall for a man who has a lot to say and has the capability to say it loud!listen up! pressed on clear vinyl with a metallic sticker insert.

jaki liebezeit, der masterdrummer, hatte seine freude an der tatsache, dass der trommelbau seit menschengedenken sich nicht wesentlich verändert hat. ob ein fell jetzt mit schnüren oder mit schrauben auf dem kessel gespannt wird, ob es ein natur- oder plastikfell ist - das prinzip bleibt dasselbe: beide umschließen einen hohlraum, ohne den es keinen klang gäbe (man stelle sich eine trommel vor, die innen drin mit lehm gefüllt wäre.) so ähnlich ist auch die rhythmus-auffassung. das Überflüssige fällt weg. dir leere mitte erscheint. das unsichtbare ist das entscheidende. alle stücke auf der zweiten ep von drums off chaos kreisen um diese leere mitte. im zentrum ist - nichts. hier geht es um abstrakte, groovende trommel-musik. die rhythmen sind so weit auf ihren elementaren kern reduziert, dass sie zwar eindeutig singulär, aber auch allgemeingütig verstanden werden können. es kommt etwas zum vorschein, das allgemeinen gesetzen wie gravitation, ergonomik und akustik folgt. „spiel, was die trommel will,“ war einer von jakis sätzen. das hat drums off chaos sich mit ihm zusammen zu herzen genommen. im zentrum stehen rhythmen, die auf einfachen zahlenverhälnissen gründen, um ihren reichtum aus sich selbst heraus zu entfalten.
